The IPTC has started to work on the next version of NewsML. The main goal is to improve version 1 and to adapt it to current requirements from the news industry.

To that end we invite all kinds of NewsML users - producers, consumers, implementors ... - to review our draft documents and to send comments on them.
A note on draft document version numbering: Only public drafts are made available on this web site, therefore the shown version numbers are not consecutive as the "missing" numbers are IPTC-internal versions.

IPTC's work schedule for the development of NewsML 2:

• Version 1 of the Business Requirement document, version 1, released after the Autumn 2004 meeting. (3 Nov 2004)

• Work on a Conceptual Model for NewsML 2 will be continued.
  A final draft should be available by mid December 2004, preliminary version earlier.

• A draft implementation of the requirements and the conceptual model as an XML Schema should be available in March 2005.

• A processing model will be developed in parallel.
  .
• A draft specification should be available in June 2005.
  

Finally we will create a new, updated specification for Version 2 based on these requirements and comments.
Our current intention is to have this accomplished in 2005.
